At Bishop Martin, children develop enthusiasm for Science through a range of engaging and hands on activities. Their knowledge and understanding of important scientific ideas are developed, along with key processes and skills. Children are taught different ways of thinking, how to find things out and how to communicate their ideas effectively.
We do endeavour to make lessons explorative, thought-provoking and inspiring, leading children to wonder, ask questions, research and then discuss their learning both in school and at home. Ultimately, we aspire to ensure children become successful, confident learners, enjoying the process of exploring values and ideas through Science.
In line with the broader aims of the INSPIRE curriculum, we carefully shape our Science curriculum to ensure it is fully inclusive and relevant for the children we teach. We develop children’s curiosity in how Science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes. The ambition for children is to teach them to develop scientific knowledge, vocabulary and conceptual understanding of nature and scientific processes, through investigative work. This will allow them to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.
Our EYFS children are naturally inquisitive and we value the importance of developing their minds. They are full of questions about the world around them and they are keen to investigate and find out how things work. We support children’s scientific knowledge by organising activities for children to participate in but also led by the children’s own interests.
In Key Stage 1, we introduce key knowledge, concepts and scientific skills to our children through the observation of phenomena, before building and expanding on these in more depth in Key Stage 2. The development of children’s curiosity and use of scientific skills builds through the sequence of knowledge taught through topics from Year 1 to Year 6.
Throughout the curriculum, knowledge is built on and developed from the skills mastered in previous years and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena.
