Promoting British Values

Promoting British Values

At Bishop Martin CE Primary School we celebrate the fact that we live in a diverse society and therefore, our curriculum and life within school reflects this. Our mission is to provide a happy nurturing environment, which develops the necessary skills for all our children to enjoy learning irrespective of race, colour, creed or impairment.

We aim to continually weave the threads of social, cultural, moral and spiritual values for our pupils throughout whole school life.

Our Definition of the Fundamental British Values

  • Respect and obey the law

  • Respect the rights of others, including their right to voice their own opinions

  • Treat others with fairness

  • Respect and understand other faiths and cultures

  • Look after yourself and your family

  • Look after the area in which you live and the wider environment

  •  Have a knowledge of British history, culture, famous British places and events

Our ethos is to encourage all children and adults to respect and support each other at all times. Children are expected to show thoughtfulness and care for each other. We believe that our Code of Conduct underpins the fundamental British Values.

  • Listen carefully to each other

  • Try our very best in all we do

  • Take good care of our school property and belongings

  • Be kind, friendly and truthful

  • Respect everyone and celebrate their differences

  •  Keep safe

At Bishop Martin we promote the fundamental British values throughout our curriculum and in particular our Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship programme.

Examples of how each year group promote these values are outlined below.

In the Early Years
We learn about our local community and environment through topics such as ourselves. We actively encourage the children to listen to each other, take turns and treat each other with respect and to value the differences we all have. We do this as an integral part of our continuous provision and particularly through our choice of stories, circle time activities and our adherence to the school code of conduct.

In Key Stage 1
We learn to value others and ourselves through topics such as ‘Why were Christopher Columbus and Neil Armstrong brave people?’ We learn about the importance of respect and valuing our environment through topics such as ‘What plants and animals would little Red Riding Hood find in Woolton?’ and ‘Where did the wheels on the bus go?’ We encourage the children to understand the importance of looking after each other, through focus weeks on anti- bullying and local and global community activities. We promote our feeling of belonging through developing a growing understanding of the importance of always respecting the rights of everyone in our Bishop Martin family and beyond.

In Year 3 and 4
We explore our differences through our local geography and history studies. We encourage our children to value and respect each other and their environment by promoting our school code of conduct and having high expectations as part of our daily life. This provides a firm basis for our children’s futures as good citizens able to make a valuable contribution to society.

In Year 5 and 6
Study the effects of WW1 and explore also our local history. We embed our school code of conduct through our daily collective worship and focus weeks in PSHE. Through this we are equipping the children with the skills required to make a valuable contribution to society and be the best that they can be.
